Take A Small Step Towards Change NOW

You don’t have to wait for January to make the changes you want...you can start right now.

I’ve been thinking about this as January creeps up on us...there’s a lot of evidence that New Year’s resolutions are NOT an effective method of change. I think most of us know that intuitively and from our own experience- that resolutions don’t often lead to lasting change.

My point with this post is less about the efficacy of New Year’s resolutions and more about waiting for ‘another time’ or the ‘right time.’ I hear this often in my clinical work (and personal life as well!)- an understanding that making a change is a good idea- however, today is not the right time to do it.

Often, the excuse on the surface makes a lot of sense- AND nonetheless, is fueled by avoidance.

Why?

Making change- getting out of our comfort zones- is often scary and hard. It’s easier to take the promise of change- and hold off until tomorrow. Which turns into tomorrow...Making change takes discipline- and grit.

So maybe ask yourself- on a scale of 1-10 how important is this change to me? WHY is it that important? And- how can I take on a small little step towards change. Just a little tweak. Because that’s how sustaining change happens- slowly and in small little increments.

As always, would love your thoughts here!

Hope you’re having a beautiful day. Lots of love!
